“God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved” -Psalm 46:5 (NKJV)
When the current of life threatens to sweep you away with it, what do you hold onto?
Navigating Uncertainty: Relinquishing control, Faith and Project Management
As someone with high-functioning anxiety, having a plan is how I navigate the world. It’s a visceral response to an environment that is in a constant state of flux.
For example, making plans with me sounds like: Oh, you want to have dinner next week? Would love to! What time are we meeting? Where are we meeting? Will there be parking? If so, is it paid or free?
So when I became a project manager, it made perfect sense—to me and everyone who knew me.
The Parallels Between Life & Project Management
The beauty of being a Project Manager is that you control the critical path. You understand dependencies, foresee potential risks, and constantly adapt to changing circumstances. Your job is to maintain a 10,000-foot view while also tracking the minutia. You know that things will change—so you live and breathe risk mitigation. You anticipate obstacles, identify unknown variables, and build contingency plans.
In my experience, 99.99% of projects never went according to plan. The only guarantee? Shifting timelines and evolving scopes. The good news was – I could make a plan to manage it!
Managing the Unknown in Life
Whether we realise it or not, we all apply a project management mindset to our daily lives. The unknown is terrifying because it’s beyond our control. We can’t apply a risk mitigation strategy or execute a change management framework. It’s dark, unpredictable, and, naturally, we try to avoid it at all costs.
But what happens when the unavoidable unknown becomes your reality?
The current becomes stronger. You cling to the fallacy of control, yet the waters rise, and the tide threatens to sweep you away. Maybe you’re in a season of deep uncertainty—waiting for that call, illness, financial hardship. The tide keeps turning, and with each passing day, the hope of keeping your head above water begins to fade.
Holding Onto Faith in the Midst of Chaos
What do you hold onto when life erodes your confidence?
Your faith, your trust in the One who set you free.
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” — Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV)
Faith can’t be tested when your feet can touch the sand—when you can see the critical path and everything is delivered on time and within budget. There’s no substance to our faith if we only believe in Him when life is certain and the future is clear.
What does it mean to be unshakable?
It means that when life threatens to break you, your faith in the Deliverer has to be greater than your reality.
Faith That Can’t Be Moved
The product of our faith must be unshakable and unwavering confidence in the God who walked on water. Regardless of your circumstances today, take a moment to reflect:
- How deeply rooted is your faith?
- What (or who) is your faith in?
The only constant in life is change and uncertainty is inevitable.
But when you feel like you’re in a state of suspension—adrift in the unknown—remember:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” — Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV)
He’s already written your story. He’s seen it through.
You need only to be still and know who He is.
