“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” – Hebrews 6:19 (NIV)

We’ve heard countless sermons and read an innumerable number of devotional pieces about the analogy of Jesus as our anchor. So here’s another post to add to the list.

This year has been the toughest to date in my adult life, and I imagine this will be one of many to come. In all aspects, I have been pushed to limits and breaking points I didn’t know were possible. Each time I thought, “there’s no way this situation could escalate further” – the situation did, in fact, escalate.

The only constant? Jesus.

Rising Tides

It’s given me a fresh perspective regarding the importance of clinging to Him in the midst of every trial. I can confidently say He has been my anchor, a force greater than the rushing waters.

The vessel still moves and feels the pull of the current. The waters keep rising, but the anchor is rooted in the bedrock. When you think the tide will overwhelm you and you’ve run out of chain, He pulls you back in. The beauty is, He’s our bedrock too. 

Links in the Chain

There’s a reason why the chain is long, the links intertwined, each link represents something. Whether that’s the church family He uses to strengthen your faith, various trials, different setbacks, what felt like a detour. Each link in the chain serves as a reminder of how faithful He’s been, how he’s equipped you AND how far He’s brought you.

His Strength is perfect in our weakness

You need to experience the full force of the waves because it’s part of the shaping process. You need to experience first hand that He knows your limits. Because where your strength ends, His begins.

Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians:

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)

So you can be pulled into the vortex, but only because He’s allowed it. The boat isn’t concerned about being swept away because the anchor holds deep.

The tensile strength of the anchor is determined by multiple factors. What we need to remember is the Lord is not limited by physical, material or environmental factors. 

We serve the same God who calmed the storm and walked on water.

He’s Steadfast

Hebrews 13 reminds us that He will never leave us.

You may wander, but you’re never too far from His reach. He wants us to run to Him first. Our relationship with Him shouldn’t be our last resort, but our first port of call.

Scripture reminds us that His name alone is safety, and the righteous run to it:

“The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” – Proverbs 18:10 (NIV)

So when the currents of life threaten to drag you under, remember that His strength is greater.
